Kansha and okagesama: gratitude as a daily Japanese expression

Kansha (感謝) is the Japanese word for gratitude. The first character, kan (感), carries the meaning of sensing or feeling; the second, sha (謝), means to thank or to apologize — a single character with both meanings, pointing to the relational weight that gratitude carries in Japanese social life.

The expression that most distinctively embeds kansha in everyday Japanese is okagesama de (おかげさまで). Literally: “in the honorable shadow of your grace.” The phrase functions as a response when someone asks how you are — “thanks to you, I am well” — even when the person asking has done nothing materially responsible for your condition. The expression performs a social posture: good fortune is shared, and one’s current state is owed to a web of others rather than to individual effort alone.

This is not an occasional phrase. Japanese speakers use okagesama de reflexively in casual conversation across the day. It frames an ordinary status update as a relational acknowledgment. The habit of attributing one’s condition to others’ support is built into the grammar of social exchange rather than reserved for conscious gratitude exercises.

That cultural embedding is structurally relevant to the behavioral research on gratitude habits. One consistent finding in habit-formation literature is that practices requiring deliberate scheduling against competing demands tend to erode; practices already part of social convention tend to persist. Okagesama de asks nothing extra of the speaker — the gratitude orientation is already the default form.

いただきます, ごちそうさま, and the Eiheiji five contemplations

Japanese meal rituals extend the same pattern to eating.

Itadakimasu (いただきます), said before meals, combines the humble verb itadaku (to receive) with the polite continuous form. The phrase acknowledges receipt — from the animals and plants that contributed to the meal, from the people who farmed and prepared it, from the household or host providing it. The standard English translation “let’s eat” loses the directional gratitude embedded in the form.

Gochisosama deshita (ごちそうさまでした), said after meals, uses go-chiso (ご馳走) — originally a term for a host’s effort in sourcing and preparing food. The full phrase: “you have done the feast / you have made the effort.” Again, an acknowledgment directed outward rather than inward, closing the meal with the same relational orientation that opened it.

These are not mindfulness rituals as understood in contemporary wellness discourse. They are social conventions, closer to saying “please” and “thank you.” Their behavioral significance for health research lies less in any single utterance and more in the repetitive structuring of attention — toward receipt, toward others’ contribution, toward the relational context of a meal — across hundreds of instances per year.

The Soto Zen tradition formalizes this further. Eiheiji (永平寺), the 13th-century Soto Zen head temple in Fukui Prefecture founded by Dogen, observes the gokange (五観の偈) — five contemplations recited before each meal. The contemplations direct attention to the effort behind the food, the monk’s personal moral condition as a receiver, the disciplinary purpose of eating (nourishment for practice, not indulgence), and the final aim of awakening. Monks at Eiheiji and affiliated temples observe the gokange at every meal, three times daily. As a practice form, it shares the structural feature of itadakimasu — orienting attention to receipt, effort, and connection — but extends it into a longer contemplative sequence.

Okinawa carries its own form: niifee deebiru (ニッファイユー), the Ryukyuan dialect expression for deep gratitude, used across community gatherings, meals, and everyday social exchange. The phrase appears consistently in accounts of Okinawa’s centenarian cohort as part of the social environment those communities inhabited — present alongside moai’s mutual obligation and the dietary patterns the Okinawa Centenarian Study documented. It is not a gratitude technique; it is how gratitude moves through community life.

What the Emmons & McCullough 2003 trial actually found

The most-cited controlled evidence for gratitude practice comes from Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough’s 2003 study, “Counting Blessings Versus Burdens,” published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Vol. 84, No. 2, pp. 377–389) — psychology’s highest-impact peer-reviewed journal.

The design: three conditions — weekly gratitude listing, weekly hassles listing, and a neutral daily events condition — run across 201 randomly assigned undergraduate participants over 10 weeks. Participants in the gratitude condition listed up to five things they were grateful for each week. This is not an intensive practice; it is a brief weekly act of directed attention.

The findings: gratitude condition participants reported higher global wellbeing, more optimism about the upcoming week, and spent significantly more time exercising (approximately 1.5 hours more per week) than participants in the hassles condition. They also reported fewer somatic complaints — physical symptoms including headache and nausea. The effects held across the study period and were present in adjusted comparisons between conditions.

A third study within the same paper extended the design to a neuromuscular disease population, finding that daily gratitude journaling was associated with higher positive affect and greater satisfaction with life compared to a control condition. This adds some generalizability beyond undergraduates, though the sample remained small.

What the study does not establish: longevity outcomes, immune biomarker changes, or any direct effect on the biology of aging. The primary sample was undergraduates (average age approximately 20), not elderly adults in a health-outcome-relevant cohort. The outcome measures were self-reported. The study says nothing definitive about whether gratitude practice produces equivalent associations in older adults, in clinical populations, or over the multi-decade timescales that longevity research requires.

It is clearer than the popular secondary literature on what the findings do and do not license.

The PNI pathway: cortisol, NK cells, and immune markers

Psychoneuroimmunology is the study of interactions between psychological processes, the nervous system, and immune function. The field has documented, across multiple research programs, that sustained negative psychological states — chronic stress, social isolation, grief — are associated with dysregulation of cortisol rhythms, reduced natural killer (NK) cell activity, and suppressed secretory IgA levels. The research on positive-affect states is less extensive but directionally consistent.

The proposed pathway for gratitude connects through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis: gratitude practice is associated with improved positive affect and reduced self-reported stress (Emmons & McCullough 2003; replicated in subsequent studies); sustained positive affect is associated with more normalized diurnal cortisol patterns in longitudinal data; and cortisol dysregulation — particularly flattened diurnal slope and elevated evening cortisol — correlates with accelerated cellular aging markers and higher cardiovascular event rates in large cohort studies.

On NK cell activity: PNI research has documented that positive emotional states are associated with higher NK cell function in some controlled conditions, drawing on a literature that includes Pressman and Cohen’s 2005 review in Psychological Bulletin synthesizing associations between positive affect and multiple health outcomes. The more established direction in this literature is that psychological stress reduces NK cell counts and cytotoxicity; the positive-state side follows by logical complement, with supporting experimental evidence. Whether gratitude journaling specifically produces measurable, durable NK cell changes has not been confirmed in a large controlled trial designed and powered for that purpose.

Secretory IgA — an antibody present in mucosal secretions — is another immune marker that PNI research has linked to psychological state. Studies measuring salivary IgA as a proxy for mucosal immune function have found it sensitive to acute emotional states, with positive emotional induction associated with transient IgA changes in laboratory conditions. The durability of such effects from a sustained gratitude practice is an open question at the controlled-trial level.

The claim stated with appropriate precision: gratitude practice is associated with psychological wellbeing improvements that are themselves linked to the immune-adjacent biomarker patterns PNI research has identified. Whether this two-step association translates into a clinically meaningful immune effect from gratitude practice specifically has not been confirmed at the trial scale needed to establish it.

This is also what distinguishes kansha’s evidence structure from kokyu’s (呼吸, breathing practice). Kokyu’s evidence is physiological first: the HRV and nasal nitric oxide mechanisms are measurable in laboratory conditions largely independent of psychological state or cultural framing. Kansha’s evidence runs through psychological wellbeing as the primary variable, with immune-marker associations as downstream correlates. Both are genuine research areas; neither establishes a direct “this practice → longer life” chain at cohort scale.

Gratitude before sleep: the Wood et al. study

Research by Wood and colleagues, published in the journal Sleep (n=401 university students), examined gratitude’s association with sleep quality. The finding: higher dispositional gratitude was associated with more positive pre-sleep thought content — fewer negative and more positive cognitions at bedtime — which in turn was associated with shorter sleep onset latency and better subjective sleep quality.

The mechanism the authors proposed is primarily cognitive. Pre-sleep worry and ruminative thought — negative problem rehearsal at the point of trying to sleep — is one of the most consistently documented predictors of delayed sleep onset in the insomnia literature. Gratitude practice, in this framework, acts partly by displacing the thought content that interferes with sleep rather than by directly modifying any physiological parameter in the first instance.

Gratitude’s proposed mechanism runs through pre-sleep cognitive content — a psychological pathway. These are structurally distinct and may operate additively. Neither has been tested against the other in a head-to-head trial.

What is defensible practically: a brief evening gratitude practice — recording what you received from others during the day, or what went well and why — is a low-cost, no-contraindication behavioral adjustment that addresses one of the cognitive interference patterns sleep research consistently identifies. That framing is more accurately grounded in what Wood et al. actually measured than any claim about sleep architecture or deep sleep physiology.

Where the evidence runs ahead of what kansha can claim

The popular framing of Japanese gratitude — that okagesama, itadakimasu, and the Eiheiji gokange constitute a cultural longevity technology — assembles the research chain in a direction the evidence does not quite reach.

What the evidence can say: gratitude practice is associated with self-reported wellbeing improvements and reduced somatic complaints in controlled studies (Emmons & McCullough 2003). These improvements likely engage PNI-adjacent pathways that link positive psychological states with immune marker associations. A pre-sleep gratitude habit is associated with better subjective sleep quality (Wood et al.). Japanese cultural forms provide daily-frequency social embedding for gratitude orientation in ways that individually scheduled wellness practices typically do not replicate.

What the evidence cannot say: that kansha extends lifespan, that practicing itadakimasu mindfully changes NK cell counts in any clinically meaningful way, or that the gratitude orientation present in Okinawan centenarian communities was causally load-bearing relative to the dietary, genetic, and social structural factors those communities also embodied. The Okinawa Centenarian Study identified niifee deebiru as part of the social environment of exceptionally long-lived people — not as an isolatable variable with a measured effect size on survival.

This is the same calibration that applies across the habits cluster this article sits within: ikigai’s Ohsaki Cohort data is observational and cannot exclude reverse causation; moai’s mortality associations come from general social isolation research, not from controlled experiments on the kō credit structure specifically; chado’s cortisol associations are inferred from mindfulness research on structurally similar practices, not from randomized chado trials. Each of these practices embodies real structural features that the relevant research identifies as associated with better health outcomes. None establishes a causal mechanism at the resolution that would let someone say “practice X for Y weeks, produce Z outcome.”

Gratitude practice research sits in similar territory. The Emmons & McCullough 2003 RCT is one of social psychology’s cleanest demonstrations that a brief, directed cognitive habit produces measurable psychological changes. The PNI chain connecting those changes to immune markers is coherent given the field’s findings. The longevity claim at the end of that chain remains an inference, not an established result.

Where to start

A brief daily or weekly gratitude practice can be built without special equipment or a structured program.

The Emmons & McCullough 2003 design used a weekly format: listing up to five things the participant was grateful for. The content bar was low — recurring items (the same relationships, the same health) appeared repeatedly across participants. The structurally important feature was the directional attention — received from, benefited by — rather than the volume or novelty of entries. A daily variant — recording three things that went well and what caused them — is consistent with related research and reduces the ceiling-effect concern that extensive listing can produce habituation over time.

Evening timing, specifically the period before sleep, adds the pre-sleep cognition pathway the Wood et al. research identified. A notebook that stays on the nightstand removes the setup friction that causes behavioral habits to lapse under cognitive load.

Janice Kaplan’s The Gratitude Diaries (Amazon) takes a more personal angle on sustained practice; it is less about the mechanistic evidence than the lived experience of a year-long gratitude experiment, useful if the research framing feels abstract.

For the cultural-philosophical ground: texts on mono no aware (物の哀れ, the Japanese sensitivity to impermanence) and wabi aesthetics provide the philosophical context from which okagesama de and the gokange grew. Japanese philosophy books on gratitude and aesthetics treat these as cultural phenomena rather than wellness techniques — which is closer to what they actually are historically.

This article sits alongside the ikigai, moai, and tea ceremony pieces as the fourth element of the same habits cluster: individual purpose, community structure, ritual social presence, and now the cognitive-emotional orientation toward receipt and relational acknowledgment that Japanese daily language embeds as an ordinary default. The research bases for each are distinct. Their co-occurrence in Japan’s longest-lived communities is documented; their individual contributions to that longevity picture remain, across the board, associational rather than experimentally established.

For those for whom low mood, persistent worry, or significant sleep difficulty are ongoing concerns: these are clinical matters, and a qualified healthcare provider is the appropriate starting point. Gratitude practice research operates in non-clinical populations and does not replicate the clinical treatment context for depression, anxiety disorders, or insomnia.
