It describes an embedded daily maintenance behavior more than a philosophy, and its cultural prevalence is partly explained by the structural conditions of Japanese urban living.

Japanese housing — particularly in dense urban environments — has historically operated under constraints that made routine tidying a functional necessity rather than an aspirational aesthetic. Multi-use rooms that shift function across the day, limited storage, and high density meant that an untended accumulation of objects quickly reduced livable space. Katazuke in this context is closer to a maintenance behavior than a worldview.

This distinction matters when evaluating international wellness coverage of Marie Kondo’s work, which often imports the visual outcomes — calm, sparse interiors — as emblematic of a timeless Japanese cultural preference. The underlying drivers are more pragmatic: behavioral defaults toward tidying developed alongside architectural and spatial constraints. What Japanese domestic culture also developed were structural supports for that behavior — defined places for categories of objects, modular storage systems, and end-of-day resetting routines that preserve functionality across multi-use spaces.

The international framing of KonMari as an expression of Japanese minimalist culture is not wrong, but it abstracts a set of practical behavioral and design solutions into a cultural aesthetic claim. That abstraction is useful for framing the method’s appeal; it is less useful for evaluating what the method actually does and why.

The Saxbe & Repetti cortisol study — what it showed and what it did not

The most-cited research connecting home environment to stress physiology is a 2010 study by Darby Saxbe and Rena Repetti published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. The finding is frequently summarized as “clutter raises cortisol” — a more confident claim than the study itself supports.

Saxbe and Repetti recruited 30 dual-earner couples from the Los Angeles area. Participants recorded verbal home tours — walking through their homes while narrating what they saw — which were coded for linguistic markers of clutter, unfinished projects, and descriptions of the home as something needing work. Participants also provided cortisol samples at multiple time points across work and home days to capture the normal diurnal cortisol decline that occurs from morning to evening.

The finding was that women who used more language indicating a stressful home environment showed flatter diurnal cortisol slopes — that is, cortisol that remained elevated later into the evening rather than declining normally. A flatter cortisol slope is a pattern that appears in other research on chronic stress exposure; in those contexts it has been associated with HPA axis dysregulation over extended periods.

Three constraints apply to interpreting this:

The sample of 30 couples is too small to establish a robust population-level relationship between home environment and cortisol profiles. The study was not designed to do that and does not claim to.

The association appeared among women in the sample but not among men. This gender asymmetry suggests the relationship is not simply about cluttered environments per se, but about how home environment interacts with role expectations and psychological attribution — women in this study may have experienced the condition of their homes as a personal responsibility in a way the male participants did not. Applying the finding to men without qualification is not supported by the data.

The design is correlational. People experiencing higher chronic stress for other reasons — caregiving demands, financial pressure, relationship conflict — may both maintain messier homes and show flatter cortisol slopes, without home environment causing either. Reverse causation and confounding are both plausible, and the study design cannot distinguish between them.

What the study contributes is evidence that perceived home environment is correlated with stress physiology — a finding consistent with broader research on perceived environmental control and autonomic regulation. It is not evidence that tidying your home will change your cortisol trajectory, and it does not establish a causal pathway of that form.

The chronic stress and aging pathway — where the evidence is stronger

While the specific home-environment-to-longevity chain lacks controlled trial support, the broader mechanisms linking chronic stress to biological aging are substantially better established in the literature.

Elizabeth Blackburn and Elissa Epel’s research on telomere biology — Blackburn shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this work — found that chronic psychological stress is associated with shorter telomere length across multiple study populations. A 2004 study by Epel and colleagues in PNAS measured telomere length and oxidative stress markers in women who were long-term caregivers for chronically ill children. Those reporting higher perceived stress showed significantly shorter telomere length, lower telomerase activity, and higher oxidative stress than lower-stress controls. The magnitude corresponded to roughly 9–17 additional years of cellular aging in the high-stress group, though cross-sectional effect size estimates of this kind carry wide uncertainty and should not be read as precise measurements.

The mechanism runs through sustained HPA axis activation. Chronic stress maintains cortisol at elevated levels across time, which contributes to chronic low-grade inflammation, disrupted immune regulation, and mitochondrial stress — each of which appears across aging research as a correlate of accelerated biological aging. Bruce McEwen at Rockefeller University developed the concept of allostatic load to describe this cumulative physiological cost: the wear-and-tear that accumulates when regulatory systems are maintained in a chronically activated state rather than returning to baseline between stressors.

Sleep is an important intermediate in this chain. Research consistently links poor sleep quality to elevated inflammatory markers (particularly IL-6 and CRP), impaired cellular repair processes, and cardiovascular risk — all of which intersect with biological aging measurements. Bedroom environment is one specific context where the chronic-stress pathway may be operating, though research on bedroom clutter and sleep quality as independent variables is observational and limited in scope.

The honest framing for katazuke and longevity is therefore this: chronic stress is associated with accelerated biological aging through specific, well-characterized mechanisms. Environmental factors that contribute to chronic psychological stress are plausible candidates for intervention within that framework. Whether home environment restructuring produces measurable effects on stress biomarkers — and whether those effects translate to longevity outcomes — has not been tested in a controlled trial. The plausibility is grounded in stress biology research; the specific efficacy of environmental tidying as a longevity intervention is not yet established, and direct RCT data linking the two do not exist.

Danshari and wabi-sabi — the philosophical layers behind the exported aesthetic

Three Japanese concepts appear most frequently in Western longevity and wellness coverage of Japanese minimalism, and they are often treated as synonyms when they describe distinct frameworks.

断捨離 (Danshari) was popularized in Japan by Hideko Yamashita in the 2000s, drawing from the ashtanga yoga tradition’s teaching of three sequential disciplines: dan (abstaining from unnecessary intake), sha (discarding what has accumulated without purpose), and ri (releasing psychological attachment even to retained objects). Danshari applies this progression to possessions and to the mental relationship with those possessions. The emphasis is behavioral and psychological — it describes a process of reduction and release, not an end-state of visual sparseness.

侘び寂び (Wabi-Sabi) is a distinct aesthetic philosophy that finds value in incompleteness, impermanence, and asymmetry. In home design contexts, wabi-sabi accepts the worn and the imperfect as carrying meaning rather than requiring removal. A wabi-sabi space may be sparse or it may contain objects with visible history and age. Collapsing wabi-sabi into a synonym for minimalism misreads both the philosophy and the design tradition it has historically informed.

物の哀れ (Mono no aware), often translated as sensitivity to impermanence or “the pathos of things,” describes an affective orientation toward transience — the emotional resonance of beauty that is partly constituted by its passing. It appears most naturally in literary and aesthetic contexts and is invoked in contemporary wellness content about tidying largely as metaphor.

Marie Kondo’s KonMari method draws most directly from Japanese domestic practice and from a sensibility about treating objects as entities that can be honored or consciously released — closer to certain Shinto-influenced attitudes toward material objects than to danshari or wabi-sabi specifically. The “spark joy” criterion (tokimeki, 何かときめくかどうか) is a somatic decision heuristic: hold each object, assess whether it produces a positive physical response, and release those that do not. The method’s structural feature — a single intensive sort by category across the entire household rather than room-by-room or incremental progress — is what makes it behaviorally distinct from routine tidying, because it restructures the inventory at the root rather than managing an ongoing high-volume environment.

Environment design as a stress management practice

The evidence base supports treating environmental design as one component of a broader stress management approach — not as a standalone longevity intervention, and not as a substitute for addressing the sources of chronic stress directly.

Cognitive load and visual competition. Research on selective attention — including work by McMains and Kastner published in Journal of Neuroscience (2011) on how competing visual stimuli reduce processing of attended targets — established that a visually complex environment imposes an ongoing attentional cost. This is not a dramatic effect in isolation, but as a background condition in a space where sustained cognitive work occurs, reducing competing visual stimuli is consistent with maintaining attentional resources across the day. This consideration is particularly relevant in home office environments where the workspace and living space are the same room.

Bedroom environment and sleep quality. If sleep disruption is a mechanism in the chronic-stress pathway to aging, and if bedroom environment contributes to sleep quality, then the bedroom carries the highest-leverage priority for environmental design within this framework. Sleep hygiene recommendations — which do have a stronger evidence base than environmental tidying per se — include maintaining a bedroom environment with low visual complexity and clear functional separation from work and stimulation contexts. A cluttered bedroom may impede both sleep onset and the psychological cue that the room is for rest; maintaining a low-object bedroom environment is consistent with those recommendations without requiring a clinical claim of its own.

Pre-commitment and inventory reduction. The KonMari approach — a single large-pass sort followed by maintaining a reduced possession base — reflects the same behavioral pre-commitment logic that appears in hara hachi bu decision design: a one-time environmental restructuring that changes the default condition, rather than relying on daily willpower to maintain tidiness within a high-inventory space. Once the object count is reduced, the ongoing maintenance cost decreases, because there are fewer objects to return to place and fewer daily decisions about where things belong. This is an environmental design intervention in the behavioral science sense — it changes the default outcome without requiring active decision-making at each point.

The case for them as longevity-adjacent practices rests on a chain of plausible mechanisms — cortisol-environment correlations, chronic stress pathways to cellular aging, sleep environment effects on inflammatory markers — rather than on direct outcome data.

The Saxbe and Repetti data, read with appropriate constraints, shows that perceived home environment is correlated with diurnal cortisol patterns in one observational sample of women. The telomere and allostatic load research establishes that chronic stress is associated with accelerated biological aging through specific, characterized mechanisms. The behavioral design research establishes that environment restructuring is more durable than willpower-dependent maintenance of high-inventory spaces.

What the combination of these findings supports is that reducing perceived environmental stressors — including home disorder, for people who experience it as stressful — may contribute to managing a category of chronic stress exposure that aging research has linked to accelerated biological aging across multiple populations. “Chronic stress is bad for long-term health” is one of the better-supported propositions in aging research. Whether environmental tidying reduces chronic stress burden in a measurable way, and whether that reduction translates to longevity outcomes, are questions the available evidence does not yet answer with controlled data.
