Affiliate Disclosure

Last updated: May 10, 2026

The short version

Some of the links in our articles are affiliate links. If you click one and make a purchase, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. This revenue helps fund our research and operations. It does not influence which research, foods, or practices we cover.

Compliance

This site complies with the United States Federal Trade Commission's Endorsement Guides and 16 CFR Part 255 regarding the disclosure of material connections. Every article that contains affiliate links displays an in-line affiliate disclosure at the top of the piece.

Programs we participate in

As of the date above, we participate in the following programs. The list changes as programs are added or terminated.

  • Amazon Associates (US, UK, JP) — books, kitchen and tableware, packaged Japanese pantry items
  • iHerb via Rakuten Advertising — Japanese pantry, supplements, tea
  • Bokksu via ShareASale — Japanese snack and pantry subscription
  • Sakuraco via ShareASale — Japanese traditional snack subscription
  • Klook — wellness travel including onsen, retreats, hot spring stays
  • Booking.com via CJ Affiliate — accommodation, including ryokan
  • Tippsy Sake — pantry section including miso, koji-related products

How we choose what to link

We aim to link to the source we believe is the best available combination of authenticity, quality, and accessibility for our reader. For traditional Japanese foods (miso, koji, shoyu, mirin, tea), we prioritize naturally fermented and minimally processed options over mass-market alternatives, regardless of which option pays better commission.

Editorial independence

Affiliate revenue does not determine which research findings, regional practices, or products we cover. We do not accept payment for positive coverage. Where we evaluate a specific brand or product, our assessment reflects publicly available information and structured analysis, not commercial relationships.

Sponsored content

Where we publish sponsored content (we have not done so as of this date, but reserve the option), it will be clearly labeled "Sponsored" at the top of the article and in any social media promotion. Sponsored content will follow the same accuracy and fact-checking standards as our regular editorial.

Health claims caveat

Affiliate links to supplements and food products do not imply that those products treat, cure, prevent, or alleviate any condition. See our Medical Disclaimer for the full health-claims caveat.
